CYQ Award in Functional Training for the Older Adult, Level 3

"Adapting group exercise for older people"

YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, in partnership with Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS and Cambridge City Council, is pleased to be able to offer a new Level 3 qualification in functional training for older people.

The course is open to any qualified Level 2 or 3 Group Instructor at the above price, but is offered at a special rate for anyone working for the Cambridge City Council Forever Active Project or similar projects within Cambridgeshire (see below).

Course Tutor

Simon Hanna is the Clinical Exercise Specialist with Cambridgeshire Community Services (NHS) Falls Prevention Service.

He has worked in the fitness industry for 18 years and has specialist qualifications in working with older people including Falls Prevention and Cardiac Rehab. He is also a course tutor and assessor for Later Life Training, Leicester College and the YMCA.

TARGET CANDIDATES

This course is designed for:

  • Exercise Instructors who wish to deliver specialist exercise sessions for older adults
  • Those who are already doing so but would like to gain a recognised qualification
PREREQUISITES

Candidates must be aged 18 or over and must:

  • Hold a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification in group exercise instruction, e.g.
    • Exercise to Music or Circuit Instruction
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The 4 day full-time course is held at the YMCA in Cambridge and covers the following subjects:
  • Anatomy and physiology in the context of the older adult
  • Exercise delivery
  • How to plan and teach safe and effective group physical activity sessions for this age group
  • How to adapt a physical activity programme for older adults and provide motivation and support
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE

Assessment is in three parts:

  • Multiple choice Theory Paper
  • Case Study - Progressive Programme
  • Practical Assessment

SPECIAL RATE

The special rate for anyone working for the Cambridge City Council Forever Active Project or similar projects within Cambridgeshire, is £150.

Any of the following qualifications are essential pre-requisites to this course. You must hold a current (dated within the past three years) certificate or have maintained Continued Professional Development in these areas. Please contact us if you are in any doubt about whether your qualifications are acceptable as pre-requisites.
